Guardiola Admits: 'Manchester City is No Longer at Its Best'
Pep Guardiola acknowledges Manchester City's decline after a 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa, emphasizing the need for self-criticism and improvement.
Pep Guardiola, the manager of Manchester City, admitted that his team is no longer performing at the level they once did. Speaking after a 2-1 loss to Aston Villa, Guardiola reflected on the reality of City’s current struggles.
"The simple truth is that Manchester City is not at its best anymore," Guardiola stated during the post-match press conference. "This is the first time in eight years that I can say this, and it's a harsh reality."
Despite a promising first-half performance, Guardiola expressed disappointment with his team’s inability to sustain their intensity in the second half. "Villa adjusted their pressing strategy in the second half, and we couldn’t cope as effectively as we did in the first," he explained.
When asked about the root cause of the team’s issues, Guardiola took responsibility, saying, "I have two options: to blame myself, which is the right choice, or to find external excuses. I choose the former." He also praised players like Erling Haaland for their self-criticism, highlighting it as a step towards overcoming their current crisis.
City's loss marked their ninth defeat in their last twelve matches, a concerning trend for a team accustomed to dominating the Premier League.
