Simeone Reflects on Reinventing Himself After Champions League Loss

Diego Simeone, head coach of Atletico Madrid, has opened up about how he overcame one of the toughest periods in his managerial career. Speaking on the podcast A Solas con, Simeone credited his wife, Carla Pereira, for helping him recover from the heartbreak of the 2016 Champions League final loss to Real Madrid.

The match, which ended in a 1-1 draw after extra time, saw Atletico lose in a penalty shootout. Simeone described the defeat as his career's lowest point. "I was deeply saddened," he said. "I questioned whether I could rebuild my team to compete and win again."

With Carla’s unwavering support, Simeone found the strength to rediscover his passion and focus. "She took me everywhere to distract my mind and helped me reinvent myself," he recalled.

Simeone emphasized the volatile nature of football, saying, "One day, you win, and you’re the best. The next, you don’t, and everything changes. I always remind my players that what matters most is today—not what you’ve won in the past."

Simeone’s resilience and adaptability have been key to his long-standing success at Atletico Madrid, earning him admiration from fans and peers alike.
