The Uruguayan football community was struck with devastating news during the Christmas festivities. Gerald Frouste, the young goalkeeper of Montevideo City Torque, was killed in a violent altercation in the Plácido Ellauri neighborhood following holiday celebrations.
According to El País, local police reported the tragic death caused by gunshot wounds to his chest and abdomen. The confrontation arose among neighbors and escalated into gunfire. Frouste's grandfather rushed him to a clinic, but he succumbed to his injuries.
His mother shared, “The dispute started at the intersection. When we tried to intervene, gunshots were fired, and Gerald was hit. The shooter was one of the neighbors.”
The perpetrator, who has six prior criminal records, was arrested after admitting to the crime. However, efforts to arrest him faced resistance, with individuals starting fires to obstruct police intervention.
Condolences poured in from Uruguayan clubs, national youth teams, teammates, and friends. The official Montevideo City Torque statement read: “It is with immense sorrow that we announce the passing of Gerald Frouste, a beloved young goalkeeper of our club. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and teammates during this heartbreaking time.”
