Manchester United Squanders €800 Million: A Fallen Superpower

Manchester United, the world's ninth most expensive team, ends the year 14th in the Premier League, facing an uncertain future and battling relegation.

Manchester United Squanders €800 Million: A Fallen Superpower

Manchester United, under the management of Rúben Amorim, concluded 2024 with a defeat against Newcastle at Old Trafford. This marked Amorim's sixth loss in eleven matches as United's head coach.

The loss to Newcastle starkly highlights the team's current state: a directionless and underperforming squad unable to capitalize on its substantial resources. Despite being the world's ninth most expensive team, valued at approximately €800 million, United has become an easy target for financially inferior teams that effectively utilize their resources to secure victories.

Manchester United has recorded 22 points, the worst first-half season performance in its history. Four consecutive winless matches, three straight home games without a victory—a first since 1979—and five losses in a single month, unprecedented since 1962, underscore the crisis. Amorim faces mounting pressure as the primary figure held accountable.

In his eleven matches at the helm, Amorim's record stands at six losses, one draw, and four wins. Initially seen as a beacon of hope at Old Trafford, he has yet to find the key to success. The team struggles with numerous errors, creating scoring opportunities is challenging, and overall performance remains subpar, especially considering the club's ambitions to compete in the Champions League and vie for league titles.

Amorim employs a 3-4-3 system that brought success at Braga and Sporting, emphasizing building play from the back and central defenders' ball-handling skills. However, many current players either lack compatibility with this system or are unwilling to adapt. Additionally, the decline in form of players like Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho poses further challenges. Despite spending over €200 million on players requested by former manager Erik ten Hag during the summer, these investments now serve a coach with a vastly different vision.

To return to success, Manchester United must adopt a long-term perspective. Players unsuited to Amorim's strategy should depart, making way for suitable additions. The club must avoid short-term result fixation, especially with upcoming challenges against Liverpool and Arsenal in early 2025. Can United emerge from this crisis and reclaim its path to success?
