Conceição: 'Worst Half of My Coaching Career'

AC Milan coach Sérgio Conceição describes his team's first-half performance against Cagliari as the worst in his 13-year coaching career, despite a 1-1 draw.

Conceição: 'Worst Half of My Coaching Career'

Sérgio Conceição, the head coach of AC Milan, has delivered a blunt assessment of his team's performance in their 1-1 draw against Cagliari in Serie A. While Milan managed to secure a point, Conceição criticized the first-half display, calling it the worst he has experienced in his 13 years as a coach.

During the post-match press conference, Conceição expressed his frustration: 'We started the game with no energy or intensity. It was, without doubt, the worst half of football I have coached in my career. The players were static, and there was no effort to break down a deep and compact defense.'

The match saw Milan struggle to find their rhythm early on. Cagliari capitalized on their defensive solidity, and in the 24th minute, they punished Milan on a counter-attack with a well-taken goal by Nadir Zortea. Milan equalized just before halftime through Álvaro Morata, who pounced on a rebound from a Christian Pulisic shot that had struck the post.

Despite creating multiple chances in the second half, including 25 shots on goal, Milan failed to find a winner. Conceição highlighted the team’s inefficiency: 'In the second half, we were more aggressive, but we lacked the clinical edge. Our attackers must learn to simplify their game instead of overcomplicating every opportunity.'

Conceição also commented on time-wasting tactics employed by Cagliari: 'I understand that teams use every advantage they can, but the referee should have added more stoppage time. Five minutes was simply not enough given the delays.'

AC Milan's inconsistent league form remains a concern, with the team currently sitting mid-table after seven wins, seven draws, and four losses. With two games in hand, Milan's position could improve, but Conceição is clear about the need for immediate improvement.

Addressing questions about his coaching methods, Conceição defended his stricter training routines and pre-match preparations. 'Discipline and structure are non-negotiable. If we want to compete at the highest level, we must embrace these standards. I was brought in to elevate this team, and that’s exactly what I intend to do.'

As AC Milan prepares for their upcoming fixtures, Conceição will need to rally his squad and address the shortcomings highlighted in this match. The road to consistency may be challenging, but under Conceição’s leadership, Milan’s supporters will hope for a turnaround in form.
