Speaking during an interview with Cadena SER, Mijatović emphasized the need for a managerial change and significant squad upgrades to ensure Real Madrid maintains its elite status.
Mijatović began by addressing the squad's structural weaknesses, specifically calling for reinforcements in the full-back positions. He remarked, 'Real Madrid has always had world-class full-backs like Roberto Carlos and Dani Carvajal. The current situation demands we restore that strength.'
He also highlighted the pressing need for a creative midfielder to succeed Toni Kroos and Luka Modrić. 'It will be a monumental challenge to find players of their caliber, but it's necessary to plan for the future,' Mijatović said. Additionally, he stressed the importance of acquiring a reliable central defender to strengthen the team’s defensive core.
On the subject of Aurélien Tchouaméni, Mijatović expressed reservations about the midfielder’s performances since his arrival at Real Madrid. 'He hasn’t convinced me in any role he’s been given so far. The expectations for him were high, but he has yet to meet them,' he stated, signaling the need for improvement or alternative solutions in midfield.
Regarding the managerial role, Mijatović proposed allowing Carlo Ancelotti to see out the current season, regardless of results, to maintain stability. However, he recommended that Real Madrid consider appointing Xabi Alonso as Ancelotti’s successor. Mijatović praised Alonso’s managerial abilities, saying, 'Xabi has shown incredible potential as a coach. He understands Real Madrid’s culture and could be the right person to lead the team into a new era.'
