Gian Piero Gasperini Dismisses Notion of Real Madrid Crisis Ahead of Champions League Clash
Atalanta's head coach, Gian Piero Gasperini, downplays suggestions of Real Madrid being in crisis, emphasizing their historical strength in the Champions League as the teams prepare to face off.
As Atalanta prepares to host Real Madrid in a pivotal Champions League match, head coach Gian Piero Gasperini has dismissed claims that the Spanish giants are experiencing a crisis. Despite Real Madrid's uncharacteristic position—24th in the league-phase standings with six points from five matches—Gasperini remains wary of their formidable European pedigree.
Addressing the media, Gasperini stated, "Some say they are in crisis, but I don't accept that. The Champions League is Real Madrid's home." He highlighted the club's record 14 European titles and their ability to perform under pressure, adding, "They have many stars on the field and Carlo Ancelotti on the bench. This game will be difficult in every way for us."
Real Madrid's recent form includes three losses in their last four Champions League matches, placing them at risk of missing the top eight and facing a playoff to reach the Round of 16. In contrast, Atalanta leads Serie A and sits fifth in the Champions League standings with 11 points, showcasing their strong form under Gasperini's leadership.
Reflecting on their UEFA Super Cup encounter earlier this season, where Atalanta pressured Real Madrid for nearly an hour before succumbing, Gasperini noted, "We have improved a lot in recent months, both in Serie A and the Champions League. Today's Atalanta is much better than the one in the Super Cup."
Gasperini also cautioned against overconfidence, emphasizing the need for focus and vigilance: "We must not enter the field with excessive confidence but act with full concentration and alertness."
This matchup is crucial for both teams, with Atalanta aiming to secure advancement and Real Madrid striving to reaffirm their status in European football. The outcome will significantly impact their respective campaigns in the competition.
