Matia Perin: 'Psychotherapy Prevented Me from Quitting Football'
Juventus goalkeeper Matia Perin reveals that psychotherapy was instrumental in overcoming injuries and mental health challenges, allowing him to continue his football career.
Matia Perin, the current second-choice goalkeeper for Juventus, has opened up about the pivotal role of psychotherapy in his career. Facing multiple severe injuries, including two anterior cruciate ligament tears and three significant shoulder injuries, Perin contemplated retiring from football at the age of 26.
In an interview, Perin shared, "I told my agent I wanted to quit football and work for him. I no longer enjoyed playing due to the constant injuries." His agent recommended seeking help from a psychotherapist, a decision that Perin credits with revitalizing his career and personal life.
"Psychotherapy helped me overcome mental challenges and depression following my injuries," Perin explained. "It transformed me into a better player, a better person, and a better father." He emphasized the importance of addressing mental health issues among athletes, advocating for the normalization of seeking psychological support.
Reflecting on his time with Thiago Motta at Genoa, Perin recalled, "At 16, I trained with Motta, who was exceptional. I never imagined he would one day become my coach." This experience underscores the unexpected paths careers can take and the importance of mental resilience in professional sports.
