Anthony Gordon Addresses Liverpool Transfer Rumors: 'They Took the Joy Out of Football for Me'
Anthony Gordon, the Newcastle United star, candidly discusses how persistent transfer rumors linking him to Liverpool have affected his enjoyment of football and reaffirms his commitment to Newcastle.
Anthony Gordon, the talented winger for Newcastle United, has opened up about the impact of ongoing transfer speculations connecting him to Liverpool. In a recent interview, Gordon expressed that these rumors have significantly diminished his enjoyment of the game.
Gordon, a lifelong Liverpool supporter, was reportedly involved in transfer talks between Newcastle and Liverpool last summer. However, the proposed deal fell through due to Newcastle's insistence on including Jarell Quansah as part of the exchange.
Since then, Gordon has committed to a long-term contract with Newcastle and is thriving at the club. Reflecting on his performance against Liverpool earlier this month, where he celebrated a goal with notable enthusiasm, Gordon stated, "I enjoyed the game; I didn't need any extra motivation for that match. My celebration was a response to all the speculation about my future—where I was going or wanted to go—without anyone actually asking me. Just let me play football; I want to be happy and play the game."
He further emphasized his dedication to Newcastle, saying, "I love it here; I've said it many times. You've never heard me express dissatisfaction. I love everyone here and enjoy playing football at this club."
Addressing the toll that transfer rumors have taken on him this season, Gordon admitted, "These speculations made me not enjoy football this year, leading to some inconsistency in my performances because I got caught up in it. But I just want to play football, especially for Newcastle. I'm only 23. All I've heard is, 'When is he leaving?' Who said I was going? I'm very happy here, love it here, love playing here, and I believe Bruno Guimarães and Alexander Isak feel the same. We're all young; we're all human. So, when people talk about these things, it questions our character, and it's very challenging."
