Jose Gomes Joins Al-Fateh, Expanding the Portuguese Coaching Presence in Saudi Arabia

Jose Gomes, the seasoned Portuguese football manager, has taken the helm at Al-Fateh in the Saudi Pro League, succeeding Slaven Bilic. This appointment adds to the increasing number of Portuguese tacticians leading teams in Saudi Arabia.

Gomes, aged 54, brings a wealth of experience from his previous managerial roles across various countries, including Portugal, England, Spain, and the Middle East. Notably, he has managed Saudi clubs such as Al-Ahli and Al-Taawoun, achieving significant success, including winning the Saudi Super Cup with Al-Ahli in the 2016–17 season.

Prior to joining Al-Fateh, Gomes was the head coach of Egyptian giants Zamalek, where he secured both the CAF Confederation Cup and the CAF Super Cup within a ten-month tenure. His departure from Zamalek was unexpected, as he left to undertake the challenge of guiding Al-Fateh away from the relegation zone.

Al-Fateh has struggled this season, amassing only six points in 13 matches, which led to Bilic's dismissal. Gomes aims to leverage his extensive experience to improve the team's performance and secure their position in the league.

His appointment contributes to the growing presence of Portuguese coaches in Saudi football, joining the ranks of Jorge Jesus at Al-Hilal, Vitor Pereira at Al-Shabab, and Pedro Emanuel at Al-Fayha. This trend underscores the Saudi Pro League's commitment to attracting top managerial talent to elevate the competition's quality.

Gomes' extensive managerial career includes stints at clubs such as Reading in England, UD Almeria in Spain, and multiple teams in Portugal's Primeira Liga. His familiarity with Saudi football dynamics is expected to facilitate a swift adaptation at Al-Fateh.

As he embarks on this new chapter, Gomes is tasked with revitalizing Al-Fateh's season and steering them towards safety, reinforcing the impact of Portuguese coaching expertise in Saudi Arabian football.
