Mikel Arteta Suggests Potential Reduction in Match Durations
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has proposed the possibility of shortening football match durations to alleviate player fatigue amid congested schedules.
In response to the increasing demands on players due to congested match schedules, Mikel Arteta, the manager of Arsenal, has suggested that reducing the duration of football matches could be a viable solution. This proposal comes amid growing concerns over player welfare and the risk of injuries resulting from the current intensity of fixtures.
Arteta highlighted the necessity for football to evolve in line with new regulations and the physical capabilities of players. He stated, 'The number of matches we are currently playing, considering the players we have, is a critical issue. Perhaps one option is to shorten the length of matches.' He also noted the recent changes in the Champions League format, which have increased the number of home and away games, indicating that reducing match time is a serious consideration.
This perspective aligns with recent adjustments in the Premier League, where referees have been instructed to allow a 30-second period after each goal before adding stoppage time, aiming to reduce overall match length. Additionally, the league has implemented measures to decrease stoppage time, such as not adding time for the first 30 seconds after a goal is scored.
Arteta's comments reflect a broader movement within football to address player fatigue and enhance the quality of the game by considering innovative changes to match structures.
