AC Milan Captain Davide Calabria Refutes Allegations of Underperformance
AC Milan's captain, Davide Calabria, has publicly addressed and dismissed recent allegations questioning his and the team's commitment and performance, labeling such claims as 'fake news' and urging respect for their professionalism.
In the aftermath of AC Milan's 2-1 victory over Red Star Belgrade in the Champions League, head coach Paulo Fonseca expressed dissatisfaction with certain players' efforts, suggesting that some did not fully honor the club's jersey. Although Fonseca did not specify names, speculation arose among fans, with fingers pointed at captain Davide Calabria and defender Theo Hernandez.
Addressing the ensuing rumors, Calabria took to Instagram to clarify his stance: 'Hello everyone, I feel the need to clarify something. In recent months, I have overlooked certain issues, hoping to avoid responding to 'unpleasant' or entirely fabricated situations. Perhaps I should have addressed them sooner. Today, I believe it's time to say a few words.'
He continued: 'In recent days and also in the past, a lot of misinformation has been spread about me and our team. Fake news that should not be given any credit, but now I believe it needs a response to protect my image and that of the group. References to on-field dynamics, various conflicts, and my private life do not correspond to the truth. These talks only create confusion and division. I demand respect for myself, the work we do, and the club we represent.'
Calabria emphasized the importance of constructive criticism while condemning falsehoods: 'Constructive criticism is part of our job, but lying is not. I invite everyone to verify the accuracy of news that can harm individuals or our club before publishing it. Our focus remains on the field, where we work every day with utmost professionalism and effort to improve. I will not allow anyone to undermine my love and commitment to my beloved team. Thank you to those who always support us. Forza Milan!'
This incident highlights the challenges players face with public scrutiny and underscores the significance of accurate reporting and respectful discourse in sports.
