Alejo Sarco Set to Join Bayer Leverkusen Under Xabi Alonso in January
Bayer Leverkusen is poised to sign 18-year-old Argentine talent Alejo Sarco this January, following a request from manager Xabi Alonso.
Bayer Leverkusen is on the verge of acquiring 18-year-old Argentine prodigy Alejo Sarco, often dubbed the 'Argentine Mbappé', in the upcoming January transfer window. This move comes at the behest of manager Xabi Alonso, who is keen to bolster his squad with emerging talent.
Sarco first garnered significant attention in May when he scored a pivotal goal for his boyhood club, Vélez Sarsfield, just one minute after being substituted into a crucial match against Estudiantes de La Plata. Despite the team's eventual loss in the penalty shootout, Sarco's performance elevated his profile, attracting interest from European scouts.
However, Sarco's journey has not been without controversy. Following his standout performance, he became embroiled in a contractual dispute with Vélez Sarsfield. The club's management issued a statement expressing their disappointment: "Our club announces that Alejo Sarco has been sidelined. This decision was made by the board of directors. His unwillingness to negotiate a contract extension during this critical period shows a lack of respect for the club."
The crux of the issue lies in Sarco's expiring contract. To facilitate a transfer that would financially benefit Vélez Sarsfield, an extension was necessary. Many in Argentina have drawn parallels between Sarco's stance and Kylian Mbappé's contract saga with Paris Saint-Germain.
Sarco's family and agent, however, defend his decision, arguing that it increases his chances of a European move. They assert that this approach has expedited his transition to Europe, where he is set to don Bayer Leverkusen's jersey under Xabi Alonso's leadership.
