Defensive Injuries Deepen Real Madrid's Struggles

Real Madrid's defense has been compromised by injuries to key players, leading to inconsistent performances and a concerning number of goals conceded in recent matches.

Defensive Injuries Deepen Real Madrid's Struggles

Real Madrid is currently grappling with significant defensive challenges, having conceded 16 goals in their last 10 matches. Manager Carlo Ancelotti is striving to address these issues, but recent results indicate that solutions remain elusive.

After heavy home defeats to Barcelona (0-4) and AC Milan (1-3), Real Madrid appeared to rebound with decisive victories against Osasuna (4-0) and Leganés (3-0). However, this resurgence was short-lived, as a 0-2 loss at Anfield against Liverpool dampened spirits. A subsequent 2-0 win over Getafe was followed by a 1-2 defeat at San Mamés to Athletic Bilbao, highlighting the team's inconsistency.

A major factor contributing to these defensive lapses is the absence of key players due to injury. The sidelining of defenders such as Dani Carvajal, Eder Militão, David Alaba, and Ferland Mendy has left the backline vulnerable. In the recent 3-3 draw against Rayo Vallecano, defensive errors were evident: Jorge de Frutos easily bypassed Fran García, leading to Unai López's goal; Abdul Mumin capitalized on a set-piece for the second; and a misjudgment allowed Isi Palazón to score the third.

Ancelotti remains optimistic, believing that the team's performance will improve as injured players return. Nevertheless, the current defensive frailties are a pressing concern. Notably, Real Madrid has conceded 16 goals in 17 matches this season, a tally they only reached after 26 games in the previous campaign. This statistic underscores the urgent need for defensive solidity if they are to compete effectively on all fronts.
