Velez Sarsfield Clinches Argentine Superliga Title After 11 Years
Velez Sarsfield secured the Argentine Superliga championship with a 2-0 victory over Huracan, marking their first league title in 11 years and the 17th in the club's history.
Velez Sarsfield emerged victorious in the Argentine Superliga, defeating Huracan 2-0 at the Jose Amalfitani Stadium. This triumph ended an 11-year title drought, earning the club its 17th star.
The stadium was filled with jubilation as legends like Carlos Bianchi, Jose Luis Chilavert, and Julio Falcioni joined 40,000 fans in celebration. Velez not only dominated the league but also topped the overall Argentine football standings with a 61% success rate. Their impressive run included reaching the Copa de la Liga final and finishing as runners-up in the Copa Argentina.
Over the last 25 matches, Velez suffered only three defeats and maintained a 19-game unbeaten streak at home. Goals from Claudio Aquino and Damian Fernandez in the first half secured the decisive win against Huracan, who struggled to respond throughout the match.
This championship grants Velez the opportunity to compete for two additional trophies: the Champions Trophy against Estudiantes and the Argentine Super Cup against Central Cordoba. Remarkably, the team has risen to prominence after narrowly avoiding relegation at the end of 2023.
The victory also benefits other clubs; River Plate qualifies for the Copa Libertadores group stage, while Boca Juniors advances to the second playoff round. Racing Club, Estudiantes, and Talleres will also participate in the 2025 Copa Libertadores.
