Rafael Louzan Elected as New RFEF President Amidst Controversy
The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has elected Rafael Louzan as its new president, aiming to restore stability after a period of turmoil.
The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has elected Rafael Louzan as its new president, concluding a tumultuous period marked by scandals and leadership changes. Louzan, who previously led the Galician Football Federation, secured 90 votes from the assembly, surpassing his rival, Salvador Gomar, who received 43 votes. This election follows the resignations of former presidents Luis Rubiales and Pedro Rocha, both of whom faced suspensions due to various irregularities.
Despite his election, Louzan's presidency is not without controversy. In May 2022, he was found guilty of malfeasance concerning a contract to improve a football pitch in the city of Morana, resulting in a seven-year ban from holding public office. Louzan has appealed this decision, and the Supreme Court is scheduled to hear his case in February 2025. This pending legal issue raises concerns about the potential for further instability within the RFEF.
Louzan's campaign, titled 'Unidos por el fútbol español' ('United for Spanish Football'), emphasizes modernizing the RFEF and fostering collaboration with regional federations. He has received public support from Javier Tebas, president of LaLiga, and has expressed intentions to work closely with the Higher Sports Council (CSD) to restore credibility to Spanish football. One of his immediate challenges will be preparing for the 2030 World Cup, which Spain is set to co-host with Portugal and Morocco.
The RFEF has experienced significant upheaval in recent years, including the resignation of Luis Rubiales following allegations of sexual assault and corruption. His successor, Pedro Rocha, was also suspended due to irregularities, leading to the current election. Louzan's appointment is seen as an opportunity to bring much-needed stability and integrity to the federation, though his pending legal appeal adds a layer of uncertainty to his tenure.
