Ademola Lookman Named African Footballer of the Year
Ademola Lookman, the Nigerian forward playing for Atalanta, has been honored as the African Footballer of the Year for 2024, following a stellar season that included a Europa League triumph and a significant contribution to Nigeria's national team.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has awarded Ademola Lookman the title of African Footballer of the Year for 2024. The ceremony took place in Marrakesh, Morocco, with FIFA President Gianni Infantino in attendance.
Lookman, a key player for Atalanta, had an exceptional year, notably scoring a hat-trick in the Europa League final against Bayer Leverkusen, securing the club's first major European trophy. His domestic performance was equally impressive, with 17 goals last season and 11 goals already in the current season.
On the international stage, Lookman played a pivotal role in Nigeria's journey to the Africa Cup of Nations final, contributing three goals during the tournament. His outstanding performances have earned him recognition over other notable players, including Morocco's Achraf Hakimi and Guinea's Serhou Guirassy.
Expressing his gratitude, Lookman reflected on his career's turnaround from a challenging period four years ago, stating, "It's been a remarkable journey, and this award is a testament to hard work and perseverance."
Lookman becomes the seventh Nigerian to receive this prestigious honor, following in the footsteps of last year's winner, Victor Osimhen.
In other award categories, Barbra Banda of Zambia was named Women's Player of the Year, Emerse Faé was honored as Coach of the Year, and the Ivorian national team received the Best National Team award.
