European Leagues and Players Union Reject New Super League Model
European Leagues and the Global Players Union have rejected the newly unveiled Super League model, citing a lack of consultation and concerns over increased match schedules.
The European Leagues and the Global Players Union have issued a joint statement rejecting the new format proposed by the Super League, now called the "Unify League." The proposal, unveiled on December 17, aims to establish an alternative competition structure recognized by both UEFA and FIFA.
The organizations emphasized that A22, the company behind the Super League, did not consult them before announcing the format. "We firmly reject any claims suggesting that we were consulted on this matter," the statement read.
In their statement, the European Leagues reaffirmed their commitment to the current football structure, where clubs qualify for UEFA competitions based on their domestic league performance. "The leagues reiterate their support for the existing system that maintains competitive balance and rewards annual performance," they stated.
Additionally, they criticized the proposed model for increasing the number of international matches, which could disrupt the football calendar. This concern comes as the Super League project currently only includes Real Madrid and Barcelona among its prominent supporters.
