Al-Khelaifi Accuses Real Madrid Over New Super League Proposal
Nasser Al-Khelaifi criticizes the 'Unify League' project, claiming it is a covert effort by Real Madrid to undermine UEFA and the European Clubs Association.
Nasser Al-Khelaifi, president of Paris Saint-Germain and chairman of the European Clubs Association (ECA), has launched a scathing attack on the latest iteration of the Super League, known as the 'Unify League.' Al-Khelaifi alleged that the project is led by Real Madrid under the guise of the company A22 Sports Management.
The Unify League proposal, which surfaced recently, suggests a pan-European competition involving 96 teams, integrating their domestic league performance into European standings. However, Al-Khelaifi dismissed it as another PR stunt by A22 to divide European football.
“This is just another gimmick by A22 to push their disruptive agenda. It’s the third time a consultancy firm and separatist clubs have tried to tear apart European football,” Al-Khelaifi stated in a letter to the ECA board. “They keep rebranding the same destructive idea while pursuing their self-interest at the expense of collective progress.”
He further accused the project of aiming to dismantle the constructive cooperation between the ECA and UEFA, which has been vital in preserving the sport's integrity and structure.
The Unify League, proposed as an alternative to the Super League, has reignited debates about the future of European football governance. Al-Khelaifi remains steadfast in defending the current system, advocating for collaboration rather than fragmentation.
