Edgar Davids Reflects on Rejecting Manchester United
Dutch football legend Edgar Davids shares his reasons for rejecting Manchester United in 1996, choosing Serie A for its allure over the Premier League.
Edgar Davids, the iconic Dutch footballer, revealed the reasons behind his decision to decline an offer from Manchester United in 1996. At the peak of his career in the 1990s, Davids became a target for top European clubs, including United.
In an interview with MGM, Davids spoke about his memorable interactions with Sir Alex Ferguson. "Leaving Ajax in 1996, I had the opportunity to join Manchester United. My conversation with Sir Alex was one of the most incredible moments of my career. He was humorous, charismatic, and exceptionally intelligent," Davids shared.
Despite the admiration, Davids chose to move to Serie A, citing the presence of legendary players in Italy as the decisive factor. "Stars of the game were playing in Serie A at the time, and I wanted to experience that era," he explained. The decision led him to AC Milan and later a successful spell with Juventus.
Reflecting on his choice, Davids said, "I don’t regret rejecting Manchester United. Sir Alex and I have since laughed about it, and there’s mutual respect between us."
