Why Real Madrid Abandoned Interest in Argentine Star
Real Madrid dropped their pursuit of Franco Mastantuono due to a significant increase in his release clause, viewing it as an unviable financial decision.
Franco Mastantuono, a rising talent from Argentina, was once touted as the next Federico Valverde. At just 16 years old, he made waves at River Plate, attracting attention from top European clubs, including Real Madrid.
Initially, Mastantuono's contract had a reasonable valuation, making him a prime target for clubs like Madrid. However, in March 2024, River Plate extended his contract, including a massive release clause of €45 million. This clause, the highest in Argentine football history, deterred many clubs, including Real Madrid, Barcelona, and AC Milan, from pursuing the player.
Real Madrid, known for avoiding inflated deals, viewed the clause as a tactic to artificially boost the player's market value. Consequently, Madrid withdrew from negotiations, refusing to let their brand be exploited for others' gain. Despite subsequent efforts by River Plate and the player’s representatives to re-engage with Madrid, the club has maintained its position.
While AC Milan has reopened talks, they are still far from meeting the release clause, leaving Mastantuono's future uncertain as European clubs reconsider their options.
