Peruvian Football Legend Hugo Sotil Passes Away at 75

Hugo 'El Cholo' Sotil, renowned for his pivotal role in FC Barcelona's 1974 La Liga triumph, passed away at 75 following a prolonged illness. Sotil had recently been hospitalized in Lima's intensive care unit due to deteriorating health. His passing comes shortly after participating in Barcelona's 125th-anniversary celebrations in Spain, where he was honored for his contributions to the club's history.

Born on May 18, 1949, in Ica, Peru, Sotil gained prominence with Deportivo Municipal before joining Barcelona in 1973. At Barcelona, he formed a formidable partnership with Johan Cruyff, leading the team to its first league title in 14 years during the 1973-1974 season. A memorable moment from that victory was Sotil's jubilant locker room call to his mother, exclaiming, 'Mom, we are champions.'

After his tenure in Spain, Sotil returned to Peru in 1977, signing with Alianza Lima and securing consecutive national championships in 1977 and 1978. Internationally, he was instrumental in Peru's national team, contributing to their Copa América victory in 1975 and participating in the 1970 and 1978 World Cups.

Sotil's legacy extends beyond his on-field achievements; he was a cultural icon in Peru, even starring in a 1972 biographical film titled 'Cholo.' His recent passing has prompted tributes from FC Barcelona and the Peruvian Football Federation, both acknowledging his significant impact on the sport and expressing condolences to his family and fans worldwide.
