De Beer was a pivotal part of Dortmund's squad from 1986 to 2001, making 181 appearances as a goalkeeper and earning immense popularity among fans during the 1990s.

Following his retirement from professional play, de Beer transitioned into coaching, serving as Dortmund's goalkeeping coach from 2001 to 2018. In 2018, he took on the role of fan relations manager, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to the club until his passing.
