Matthaus Warns Dortmund: Strengthen Defense Now!

Lothar Matthaus, one of Germany's most celebrated football legends, has delivered a stern warning to Borussia Dortmund. He has called on the club to make critical defensive reinforcements during the ongoing transfer window, describing the move as essential for their ambitions this season.

In a recent interview, Matthaus outlined Dortmund's pressing defensive issues. "Their defensive line is under immense strain. Injuries have left them vulnerable, with just three natural center-backs available: Nico Schlotterbeck, Niklas Sule, and Anton. While versatile players like Ramy Bensebaini or Emre Can can step in temporarily, it's not a long-term solution, particularly given their lack of depth at full-back positions," Matthaus explained.

Dortmund's need for defensive stability comes amid fluctuating form in the Bundesliga and their ambitions in European competitions. The club has faced criticism for its failure to adequately address squad depth, a factor Matthaus believes could jeopardize their season if left unresolved.

Adding to Dortmund's challenges is the potential departure of forward Donyell Malen, who has been linked with a move to Aston Villa. Matthaus commented on the situation, "Resolving Malen's transfer saga is essential. It's been a source of uncertainty for over a year, and such distractions can disrupt the team. If his departure provides financial flexibility, Dortmund must channel those funds into defensive acquisitions."

The January transfer window closes on February 3, leaving Dortmund with limited time to act. Matthaus stressed, "If Dortmund wants to compete at the highest level, they must move decisively. Strengthening the defense is not optional; it's a necessity."

With the clock ticking, all eyes are on Dortmund to see if they heed Matthaus's advice and take the steps needed to reinforce their squad in the critical weeks ahead.
