Iraqi Legend Younis Mahmoud Refuses to Apologize to Saudi Arabia
Younis Mahmoud, former Iraqi football star and current vice president of the Iraqi Football Federation, firmly states he will not apologize to Saudi Arabia, asserting he made no disrespectful remarks.
Younis Mahmoud, the former star of Iraq's national football team and current vice president of the Iraqi Football Federation, has firmly stated that he will not apologize to Saudi Arabia, asserting that he made no disrespectful remarks towards their national team. This response follows a recent video where Mahmoud was seen laughing during an interview when a journalist mentioned Saudi Arabia as a contender for the Gulf Cup title.
Mahmoud clarified, "There is no reason to apologize because I did not insult any national team. Such behavior is not part of my ethics. However, no one can prevent me from laughing or smiling, regardless of who they are. I am aware of my position and responsibilities and always prepare solutions before problems arise."
He further explained that his reaction was spontaneous, stemming from a series of similar questions posed by journalists from different countries, leading him to believe the questions were coordinated. Mahmoud emphasized that his laughter was natural and without any prior intent.
Addressing the reactions on social media, Mahmoud remarked, "What I observed on social networks, particularly from some Saudi media outlets, seems to be an attempt to attract attention by distorting the truth. The pressures I face in Iraq are far greater than the reactions to my laughter."
Mahmoud concluded by urging media outlets to adhere to professional ethics and integrity, stating, "Media should publish statements in full and without distortion, as misrepresentation leads to misunderstandings and incorrect perceptions, which is entirely unprofessional."
