Aubameyang Criticizes Chelsea’s Chaotic Locker Room
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang compares Chelsea’s 2022 locker room to a rugby team due to overcrowding, reflecting on his tumultuous time at the club.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, former Chelsea striker, has offered sharp criticism of the club’s state during his short stint in the 2022-23 season. The Gabonese forward, who joined Chelsea from Barcelona, described the team’s locker room as chaotic, likening it to a rugby squad rather than a football team due to the sheer number of players.
A Difficult Transition
Aubameyang signed for Chelsea in the summer of 2022, reuniting with his former Borussia Dortmund coach Thomas Tuchel. However, his tenure started on a sour note as Tuchel was dismissed just 24 hours after Aubameyang’s debut, a 1-0 Champions League loss to Dinamo Zagreb. Reflecting on this period, Aubameyang said, "When you join a new club, you want to make an immediate impact. But everything was disorganized from the start."
Overcrowded Squad
Under Graham Potter, who succeeded Tuchel, Aubameyang struggled for playing time. "There were so many players in the squad that it felt like a rugby team. Training sessions were crowded, and it was challenging to build team chemistry," he remarked. Despite the chaos, Aubameyang found solace in teammates like Hakim Ziyech, Kalidou Koulibaly, Dennis Zakaria, and Romelu Lukaku, who helped him navigate the challenging environment.
Limited Impact
During his brief spell at Chelsea, Aubameyang scored just three goals in 21 appearances before parting ways with the club. Despite his efforts to stay and prove his worth, he felt sidelined under Potter’s management, which led to frustration and an eventual departure.
Looking Ahead
Now playing for Marseille, Aubameyang reflects on his Chelsea experience as a period of disarray. His comments highlight broader issues at the club during that season, including mismanagement and an oversized squad, which Chelsea has since attempted to address.
