Fernando Santos: Ronaldo Still the Best in the World

Fernando Santos, the former head coach of the Portugal National Team, has reiterated his belief that Cristiano Ronaldo remains the best football player in the world. Currently managing the Azerbaijan national team, Santos expressed these sentiments during the Portuguese Football Federation’s 110th anniversary celebration.

Santos, who famously led Portugal to their first major international trophy by winning Euro 2016, highlighted Ronaldo’s continued significance both on and off the pitch. When asked about Ronaldo’s future, Santos confidently stated, "Cristiano has consistently proven himself at every stage. I have no doubt he will represent Portugal in the 2026 World Cup. He is still at the pinnacle of football, and to me, he is the best player in the world."

As Portugal gears up to co-host the 2030 World Cup, Santos expressed enthusiasm about his country’s deep football heritage. "Hosting the World Cup would be an extraordinary gift to the Portuguese people," he said. "Lisbon, and Portugal as a whole, lives and breathes football, and I hope to see this dream realized."

Santos and Ronaldo share a storied history, having worked together during Santos’ tenure as Portugal’s manager from 2014 to 2022. Their collaboration brought Portugal not only the Euro 2016 title but also the 2019 UEFA Nations League trophy. This era solidified Ronaldo’s legacy as one of the most impactful figures in Portugal’s football history.

Despite stepping away from managing Portugal, Santos continues to support the national team and Ronaldo, reflecting the strong bond he developed with the players. "Cristiano's professionalism and hunger for success are unmatched," he added. "I’m certain he has more iconic moments ahead of him in a Portugal jersey."

As discussions about the 2026 World Cup and Ronaldo’s enduring career persist, the legendary forward remains a source of inspiration for fans and a testament to the longevity of greatness in football.
