Michael Ballack: Dortmund's Main Issue Isn't the Coach

Michael Ballack highlights Borussia Dortmund's main problem as a lack of leadership on the pitch rather than issues with their coach.

Michael Ballack: Dortmund's Main Issue Isn't the Coach

Michael Ballack, the legendary German footballer, has weighed in on Borussia Dortmund’s current challenges. In a recent interview, Ballack emphasized that the club’s struggles stem from a lack of leadership on the field, not from coaching deficiencies.

After a disheartening 4-2 defeat to Holstein Kiel, pressure on head coach Nuri Sahin has intensified. However, Ballack, known for his sharp insights as a former player for top clubs like Bayern Munich and Chelsea, believes that coaching isn't the core issue. He stated, "Both Sahin and his predecessor, Edin Terzić, understand Dortmund deeply. The problem lies in mentality and leadership within the squad."

Ballack compared Dortmund's situation to Bayer Leverkusen during his playing days, explaining how a lack of ambition beyond Champions League qualification can hinder a team’s growth. He said, "When your goal is only to qualify for the Champions League, it reflects on your overall approach. Saying 'I want to be champion' sets a higher standard, pushing the team to compete at every level."

Discussing Dortmund’s inconsistent performances, particularly in away matches, Ballack pointed to the absence of strong leaders on the pitch. "The team needs one or two elite players with leadership qualities who can manage the game in difficult moments," he remarked. He mentioned players like Granit Xhaka, who currently excels at Leverkusen, as an example of the type of personality Dortmund lacks.

Furthermore, Ballack noted that while players like Julian Brandt are technically gifted, they don’t possess the commanding presence required to guide the team. He added, "The void left by Mats Hummels as a locker room leader remains unfilled, and this lack of leadership is evident in crucial matches."

Ballack concluded by reiterating that Dortmund’s problems are systemic and cannot solely be blamed on Nuri Sahin. He urged the club to focus on building a stronger, more balanced squad capable of achieving sustained success both domestically and in Europe.
