Liverpool FC manager Arne Schreuder has shed light on the club's decision to cancel their plans to sign Martín Zubimendi, the standout midfielder from Real Sociedad. Schreuder attributed the decision to the remarkable performances of Ryan Gravenberch, who has excelled in a deeper midfield role this season.
Liverpool had initially targeted Zubimendi as a key acquisition for the summer, prepared to activate his €56 million release clause. However, the Spanish international's commitment to staying with Real Sociedad led to a reassessment of priorities at Anfield. This gave Gravenberch an opportunity to shine in his preferred role, and the Dutchman has not disappointed.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with TNT Sports, Schreuder praised Gravenberch’s impact: "Ryan has proven to be a game-changer in midfield. His ability to escape tight spaces, break the press, and transition the ball quickly to our forwards has been exceptional. His performances have convinced us that we don’t need to look elsewhere for a midfielder of Zubimendi’s profile."
Schreuder also discussed Liverpool’s broader midfield strategy, emphasizing the importance of delivering opportunities to their elite attacking lineup, which includes Mohamed Salah, Cody Gakpo, Darwin Núñez, and Diogo Jota. "Players like Alexis Mac Allister and Gravenberch have adapted wonderfully to their deeper roles. Their ability to contribute both defensively and offensively gives us the balance we need to thrive in high-pressure games," Schreuder added.
Additionally, Schreuder highlighted the team’s collective defensive mindset: "One of our biggest strengths is defending as a unit. Every player, from the forwards to the backline, understands their role in maintaining our structure. This cohesion has been a cornerstone of our success this season."
While Zubimendi remains a talented player, Liverpool's faith in Gravenberch has provided a clear path forward, ensuring that the Reds maintain their upward trajectory without the need for a marquee midfield signing.
