Jesús Emilio Díez, a former player for Athletic Bilbao, has been apprehended by Spanish police after being on the run for nearly a decade. Díez, known as one of the largest cocaine traffickers in Spain and Europe, was arrested during a complex operation in Cádiz.
Authorities reported that Díez, who had been evading capture since 2015, was traveling under a false identity when he was stopped at a checkpoint. Investigators had been tracking his movements and intercepted him while he attempted to cross a specific route. Police confirmed that Díez is linked to the trafficking of 950 kilograms of cocaine and is the suspected leader of an organized crime group.
Díez's past as a professional footballer has shocked the public in Spain. He began his career with Athletic Bilbao in 1995 but later moved to Lleida, ending his football career prematurely and reportedly entering the world of crime soon after.
The Spanish judiciary plans to prosecute him not only for drug trafficking but also for his role as the head of a criminal organization. The case has drawn significant media attention due to Díez's dramatic shift from professional sports to organized crime.
