Bahrain's Stunning 3-2 Victory Over Saudi Arabia Despite Renard's Return
In a thrilling Gulf Cup encounter, Bahrain overcame Saudi Arabia 3-2, rendering Hervé Renard's return as head coach ineffective in reversing Saudi fortunes.
In the opening match of Group B in the Arabian Gulf Cup, Bahrain secured a dramatic 3-2 victory over Saudi Arabia, undermining the anticipated impact of Hervé Renard's return as Saudi head coach.
Bahrain took the lead in the 19th minute when Mahdi Abduljabbar headed in a precise corner from Mahdi Al-Humaidan. They doubled their advantage just before halftime, with Al-Humaidan capitalizing on a defensive error to score from close range.
Saudi Arabia responded in the 73rd minute through Musab Al-Juwayr, who fired a powerful shot into the net following Sultan Al-Ghannam's cross. However, Bahrain quickly restored their two-goal cushion three minutes later, as Mohamed Marhoon lobbed the ball over the advancing goalkeeper.
A late penalty converted by Saleh Al-Shehri in the 83rd minute reduced the deficit, but Saudi Arabia couldn't find an equalizer. This defeat continues Saudi Arabia's struggles, even with Renard's reinstatement as coach.
