Sale of Tonali Led to Death Threats, Says Milan Owner
AC Milan owner Gerry Cardinale reveals that the sale of Sandro Tonali to Newcastle United resulted in severe backlash, including death threats from fans.
Gerry Cardinale, owner of AC Milan, disclosed that the transfer of Sandro Tonali to Newcastle United provoked intense reactions from fans, culminating in death threats. Cardinale shared these insights during a conference at Harvard University, emphasizing his unwavering commitment to the club despite the challenges.
Addressing the decision to sell Tonali, Cardinale stated, "We didn't have an urgent need for funds, but their offer was exceptional. We received €70 million plus an additional €10 million based on goals scored, marking the largest sale in Serie A history. This transaction enabled us to sign six new players and comprehensively rebuild the team. It was a strategic business opportunity that we capitalized on. However, in the days following the sale, I received death threats from fans."
Cardinale also reflected on his acquisition of Milan, noting, "When I purchased Milan, some labeled me as crazy, but our management approach is prudent. Winning the Serie A title is undoubtedly our goal, but we must maintain balance. Inter won the Scudetto last season and faced financial collapse. Is that what Milan fans desire? I understand that fans aspire for championships every year, but my responsibility is to prepare Milan annually for success in Serie A and the Champions League."
