Coleen Rooney: Death Threats After Wayne's Move to United

Coleen Rooney, wife of football legend Wayne Rooney, has opened up about the intense hostility their family faced after Wayne’s 2004 transfer from Everton to Manchester United. The move, which was seen as a betrayal by many Everton fans, resulted in death threats and vandalism that severely disrupted their lives.

Speaking candidly in a recent interview, Coleen shared, 'When Wayne decided to join Manchester United, we knew it would cause a stir, but we never imagined the level of anger it would provoke. Fans shattered our windows and sprayed threatening messages on our house. We even received death threats over the phone.'

The situation quickly escalated, forcing the family to take drastic measures. Sir Alex Ferguson, Manchester United’s legendary manager, advised the Rooneys to relocate to Manchester immediately for their safety. 'We moved to Manchester to protect ourselves, but it was difficult as both our families were still in Liverpool and had to deal with the aftermath,' Coleen explained.

Coleen also described the lasting impact of the hostility. 'Even simple things like going back to Liverpool for shopping or dining became impossible without fear. The atmosphere was so hostile that we felt unsafe in our own city.'

Despite the challenges, Coleen emphasized that the decision to move was the right one for Wayne's career. 'Wayne achieved incredible things at United. He became the club’s all-time leading scorer and won countless titles. Looking back, it was all worth it, but it came at a cost.'

Wayne Rooney joined Manchester United in 2004 at just 18 years old for a then-record fee for a teenager. During his illustrious 13-year tenure at Old Trafford, Rooney scored 183 goals in 393 Premier League appearances and won numerous trophies, including five Premier League titles, one FA Cup, one UEFA Champions League title, a UEFA Europa League title, and a FIFA Club World Cup.

While the Rooneys’ story highlights the personal sacrifices often made in professional football, it also underscores the passion and intensity that surround the sport, particularly in English football’s most storied rivalries.
