Norwegian Clubs Reject Use of VAR in Domestic League
The majority of Norwegian clubs voted against the use of VAR in the top-flight league, citing high costs and other concerns.
In a surprising move, the majority of clubs in Norway's top-flight football league voted against the use of VAR (Video Assistant Referee) for the upcoming seasons. The vote, conducted among 32 clubs, resulted in 18 clubs rejecting the technology, while only 9 clubs were in favor, and 5 clubs abstained from voting.
This decision, although significant, does not immediately end the use of VAR in Norway's domestic competitions. The clubs' votes are advisory, and the final decision will rest with the Norwegian Football Federation (NFF). Despite the rejection by most clubs, the NFF will consider the feedback when making its final decision about VAR’s future use in the league.
The controversy surrounding VAR in Norway has intensified, with the Norwegian Football Supporters Union issuing a statement criticizing the high costs associated with the technology. The supporters' group has suggested that the money allocated to VAR should instead be directed toward grassroots football development in the country. Currently, the cost of VAR usage in Norway stands at around 1.5 million euros annually, half of which is funded by the NFF, with the remaining amount covered by the clubs themselves.
While VAR has been praised for its ability to reduce refereeing errors, many clubs argue that the high costs are not justified, especially given the size of the league and the resources available to most clubs. These concerns have now led to an overwhelming rejection of VAR, with many clubs prioritizing investment in the future of Norwegian football at the grassroots level.
As the debate over VAR in Norway continues, the NFF's final decision will be closely watched, as it could have wider implications for the future of VAR in smaller football leagues globally. With strong opinions on both sides, this issue is likely to remain a hot topic in Norwegian football for the foreseeable future.
