Jamie Carragher Calls for Ban on Risky Goalkeeper Passes
Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher suggests banning direct passes by goalkeepers to teammates under pressure after Arsenal's win.
Former Liverpool star Jamie Carragher has proposed banning direct passes from goalkeepers to outfield players under pressure, following a near-disastrous moment during Arsenal's 5-1 victory over Crystal Palace in the Premier League.
During the match, Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya passed the ball to Thomas Partey, who was retreating and heavily marked. This decision almost led to a Palace goal, saved only by their attackers' inaccuracy. Carragher criticized the play, stating, "It’s the worst decision in football for a goalkeeper to attempt such passes directly to marked teammates."
He added, "The number of goals conceded due to these risky plays in the Premier League is astounding. Goalkeepers should be restricted from making such passes and encouraged to deliver the ball forward to the flanks instead."
Carragher's remarks have sparked a debate about modern goalkeeping tactics and whether new regulations should be introduced to improve gameplay safety and efficiency.
