Philipp Lahm: Comparing Neuer to His Prime Is a Big Mistake
Philipp Lahm, Bayern Munich legend, believes that comparing Manuel Neuer to his peak form is unfair and adds unnecessary pressure on the goalkeeper.
Philipp Lahm, the former right-back for Bayern Munich and the German national team, has expressed his views on the current state of Manuel Neuer's career. Lahm emphasized that comparing Neuer to his prime years is a significant mistake that only increases pressure on the veteran goalkeeper.
In an interview with Kicker magazine, Lahm stated: "One of the issues Neuer faces today is that people constantly compare him to his peak form. We must remember that he has aged and overcome a severe injury. Therefore, such comparisons are unfair. The pertinent question is whether he still performs well, and the answer is yes."
Lahm also mentioned that the decision regarding Neuer's future lies solely with the player: "Neuer is the primary decision-maker about his future and must make this choice wisely. I recall retiring from the national team after the 2014 World Cup and from football three years later because I felt I could no longer continue."
He further praised Neuer's impact on the game: "Neuer revolutionized the goalkeeping position and, in my opinion, remains one of the best goalkeepers in the world."
Regarding the current Champions League format, Lahm finds it highly exciting: "The new Champions League format is incredibly thrilling, with at least one major match each week, keeping the competition intense until the very end."
He also assessed Bayern Munich's chances: "While many teams currently seem better positioned to reach the final, given that it's being held in Munich, I believe Bayern has the motivation to make it there."
