Edouard Mendy: Saudi Football Quality Matches European Leagues
Edouard Mendy, Al Ahli's goalkeeper, claims the Saudi Pro League is on par with European football in terms of quality and competitiveness, praising its rapid growth.
Edouard Mendy, the former Chelsea goalkeeper and current star of Al Ahli, has praised the Saudi Pro League, stating that its quality is equal to that of European football. Mendy expressed his happiness playing in such an environment and highlighted the league's competitiveness.
Speaking on the Business of Sport podcast, Mendy said: “I play for one of the biggest clubs in Saudi Arabia with a fantastic fan atmosphere. It’s incredible to perform in such conditions, and my family and I enjoy living here. It’s not just about the money; the league is highly competitive.”
The Senegalese goalkeeper referenced the growing list of football stars moving to Saudi Arabia, such as Roberto Firmino, Ivan Toney, and Riyad Mahrez, all of whom he previously faced in England. “From my perspective, the level of play in Saudi Arabia has no difference compared to Europe. We have a German coach and several European players at Al Ahli,” he added.
Mendy also spoke about the league’s future: “Saudi football has a bright future. I am excited to see what will happen here in 5 to 10 years.”
When asked about his toughest opponent in Saudi Arabia, Mendy answered without hesitation: “Karin Benzema. I faced him during my time at Chelsea against Real Madrid, and now it’s an honor to play against him again here.”
Lastly, Mendy expressed his wish to see his former coach, Thomas Tuchel, in Saudi Arabia one day, further underscoring the league's growing reputation.
