Fonseca: I Love Roma, but Milan Must Win
AC Milan's head coach, Paulo Fonseca, expresses affection for his former club AS Roma but emphasizes the necessity for Milan to secure victory in their upcoming Serie A clash.
In anticipation of the Serie A match between AC Milan and AS Roma, Milan's head coach Paulo Fonseca shared his thoughts during a pre-match press conference.
Fonseca, who previously managed Roma from 2019 to 2021, acknowledged the personal significance of facing his former club: 'Playing against Roma is special for me because I have many friends there. However, when the match begins, everything returns to normal, and we fight for Milan's victory.'
Addressing Milan's current position in Serie A, Fonseca dismissed any notions of conceding the season: 'There are many games left until the end of the season. I respect those who think otherwise, but I never think that way.'
Regarding team injuries, Fonseca provided updates on key players: 'We won't have Christian Pulisic, Rafael Leão, Álvaro Morata, and Ruben Loftus-Cheek for tomorrow's game. Alex Jiménez will likely replace Leão; he has been performing well in training and is confident.'
He continued: 'I expected Pulisic to be available, but he has been dealing with an ankle issue over the past two days, which emerged during his recovery process. Therefore, he won't be ready for tomorrow.'
Fonseca also mentioned the status of Ismaël Bennacer: 'Bennacer isn't ready to play yet, but I'm pleased he's back in training. He brings great energy to the team and will be on the bench tomorrow.'
On the potential inclusion of Theo Hernández, Fonseca noted: 'He needs physical improvement. I've spoken with Theo, and he knows he must perform better. I've had positive feelings about him in recent days, but I don't know if he'll play tomorrow.'
When questioned about transfer rumors linking Fikayo Tomori to Juventus, Fonseca responded: 'I haven't discussed this with him, but Tomori is an important player for Milan. I can't confirm his return to the lineup at this moment.'
