Luis Enrique Exposes the Myth About Ligue 1's Competitiveness
Paris Saint-Germain's head coach, Luis Enrique, challenges the misconception of Ligue 1 being a low-level competition, highlighting its high quality and competitiveness.
Luis Enrique, appointed as Paris Saint-Germain's head coach in 2023, has discovered the true strength of French football and Ligue 1. After a year and a half with the Parisians, the Spanish coach shared his impressions of the league's overall level, admitting his surprise at its quality. According to him, Ligue 1 is far superior to what he had been led to believe.
Following PSG's 4-2 victory over Monaco, one of their fiercest rivals, Enrique emphasized that the information he had received was entirely inaccurate, and the league has exceeded his expectations. He stated, "From last season, Monaco has undoubtedly been one of the toughest opponents due to the quality of their players, coach, and style of play. Marseille has performed better this season with a new project. Last year, there were also very good teams: Brest, Lens, Rennes, Nice, who were exceptional in the first half of last year. And this year, we see several French teams achieving good results in the Champions League."
Enrique continued, "Everyone says the league's level is low, but that's not the case at all. For example, Lille was also a very good team last season. The level of Ligue 1 is high, and winning this league is challenging, even if we are obliged to win it due to our potential. But the league's level is higher than what I initially heard and expected. This is what several coaches who have come to Ligue 1 this season have also told me. Everyone says the league's level is low, but it's not the case at all. We can see this in Europe. This claim is nothing but a lie."
