The presence of fugitive coach Zoran Mamić in a Croatian charity football tournament led to significant controversy, with several players refusing to participate in the final match.

Controversy Erupts as Fugitive Coach Participates in Charity Match

A charity football tournament in Lubuski, Croatia, intended to raise funds for children in need, became embroiled in controversy due to the participation of Zoran Mamić, a former coach evading legal sentencing.

Mamić, who fled Croatia to avoid serving a prison sentence for fraud, was coaching the team Sirius in the tournament. His involvement prompted three players from the opposing team, Academia Sport Bar—Jerko Marinic, Nikola Tomicic, and Josip Bozinovic—to boycott the final match in protest.

Jerko Marinic, a former Croatian water polo champion, expressed his disapproval, stating, 'I came here to support a humanitarian cause, but I cannot in good conscience participate alongside someone evading justice.'

The incident has sparked a broader debate in Croatia about the ethics of allowing individuals with pending legal issues to participate in public events, especially those intended for charitable purposes.
