Michael Newberry, a former Newcastle United academy defender and current player for Cliftonville FC, has died suddenly at the age of 27. Newberry, who celebrated his birthday on December 30, was found deceased on the same day, leading to widespread mourning within the football community.

Cliftonville FC expressed their devastation, stating, 'Our condolences are extended to Michael's family and friends, as well as the many teammates he played with during his career, and fans who will be shaken and saddened by this heartbreaking news.' In respect, the club postponed their scheduled fixture against Dungannon Swifts.

Newberry began his career at Newcastle United, progressing through the academy before departing in 2018. He subsequently played for Icelandic side Víkingur Ólafsvík and Northern Ireland's Linfield FC, where he won two Irish Premiership titles, before joining Cliftonville in the summer of 2024.
