German Super Cup Renamed After Franz Beckenbauer
The German Football Association announces renaming the Super Cup to honor football legend Franz Beckenbauer.
The German Football Association (DFB) has confirmed that from next season, the German Super Cup will officially be known as the Franz Beckenbauer Super Cup.
This renaming serves as a tribute to one of the most iconic figures in German and global football history.
Heidi Beckenbauer, Franz’s wife, expressed gratitude for this gesture, stating, "Franz always wanted to see the match between the Bundesliga champion and the German Cup winner named after him, particularly as he achieved victories in both competitions multiple times."
Bernd Neuendorf, President of the German Football Federation, highlighted Beckenbauer's lasting impact on the sport: "What he accomplished for football is unparalleled and unforgettable. Naming the Super Cup after Franz Beckenbauer creates a lasting connection between his legacy and the sport at every level."
Known as "The Kaiser," Franz Beckenbauer led Germany to World Cup victories in 1974 as a player and in 1990 as a coach. He also chaired the organizing committee for the 2006 FIFA World Cup, cementing his influence as one of football's greatest icons.
With this decision, the Super Cup not only represents a clash between Bundesliga and German Cup champions but also stands as a permanent homage to one of football's legendary figures.
