Inaki Pena Credits Hansi Flick for His Outstanding Form
Former Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Roberto Jimenez praises Barcelona's Inaki Pena, attributing his recent success to the guidance of coach Hansi Flick.
Roberto Jimenez, a former goalkeeper for Atletico Madrid, has commended Inaki Pena for his excellent performances with Barcelona, crediting head coach Hansi Flick as a significant factor behind his improvement.
As Barcelona prepares to face Atletico Madrid without key players Marc-André ter Stegen and Lamine Yamal, Pena has stepped up to fill the void left by Ter Stegen. The young goalkeeper will compete against Jan Oblak, the current leader for the Zamora Trophy.
Jimenez highlighted Pena’s growth since last season, when he initially faced criticism while covering for an injured Ter Stegen. This season, however, Pena has impressed with crucial saves against teams like Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, and Borussia Dortmund.
“The role of a goalkeeper is mentally demanding, often all or nothing,” said Jimenez, reflecting on his two-decade career at top clubs including Benfica, Olympiacos, West Ham, and Valladolid. He emphasized that playing for a competitive team provides better resources and systems, making it easier for goalkeepers to excel compared to clubs battling relegation.
Jimenez's remarks underline the significant impact of Hansi Flick’s coaching in nurturing young talents like Pena, solidifying Barcelona's depth in critical positions.
