Julian Nagelsmann Regrets Reaction During Euro 2024 Match Against Spain
Germany's head coach, Julian Nagelsmann, expresses regret over his reaction to a controversial handball incident involving Marc Cucurella during the Euro 2024 quarter-final against Spain.
In a forthcoming documentary set to release on January 11, Germany's head coach, Julian Nagelsmann, reflects on his conduct during the Euro 2024 quarter-final match against Spain. Nagelsmann admits surprise and regret over his reaction to a contentious handball incident involving Spanish defender Marc Cucurella.
During the match, a shot from Germany's Jamal Musiala struck Cucurella's hand inside the penalty area. The referee, after consulting with VAR, chose not to award a penalty, a decision that sparked significant debate. Nagelsmann recalls his intense reaction to the incident, stating, 'When I look back at it now, I'm surprised by my own reaction. Of course, there were moments where my response went beyond that situation. Ultimately, we must strive to stay within our boundaries and achieve success, even if a penalty isn't awarded in a game.'
Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer also shares his perspective in the documentary, expressing his expectation that a penalty would be given after the review. Midfielder Ilkay Gündogan adds, 'In 8 or 9 out of such handball situations, a penalty is awarded. I thought this would be the same, but a very bitter decision was made against us.'
The documentary aims to provide an in-depth look at Germany's journey through Euro 2024, shedding light on pivotal moments and decisions that influenced their tournament experience.
