Manuel Neuer Named Bayern's Biggest Disappointment of 2024
In a recent fan poll, Bayern Munich supporters have labeled Manuel Neuer as the club's most disappointing player of 2024, citing his red card against Bayer Leverkusen and subsequent injury.
According to a survey conducted by the German publication Bild, Bayern Munich fans have expressed their dissatisfaction with veteran goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, naming him the club's biggest disappointment of 2024. The 38-year-old received 18% of the votes, surpassing other underperforming players.
The pivotal moment influencing this sentiment occurred during the DFB-Pokal Round of 16 match against Bayer Leverkusen, where Neuer's early red card for a foul on Jeremie Frimpong significantly contributed to Bayern's 1-0 defeat and elimination from the tournament. Adding to the team's woes, Neuer sustained a rib injury during the incident, sidelining him for the remainder of the year.
In response to the incident, Neuer stated, 'That red card determined the outcome of the game. We couldn't play as before, and the opponent gained motivation to win. That dismissal hurt us, and I'm sorry it happened.'
Other players noted in the poll include French defender Sacha Boey, who joined from Galatasaray in January for €30 million but managed only 10 appearances due to multiple injuries, receiving 12% of the votes. Additionally, Japanese defender Hiroki Ito, a €23.5 million acquisition, was mentioned for his limited impact following surgeries for a metatarsal fracture.
Despite these setbacks, there were highlights for Bayern in 2024. Midfielder Jamal Musiala was overwhelmingly voted Player of the Year by 51% of fans, lauded for his exceptional performances, including 21 goals and 9 assists in 42 matches. Furthermore, Michael Olise, a €51 million signing from Crystal Palace, was recognized as the best new addition, securing 76% approval for his contributions.
The survey also identified the team's 5-1 victory over RB Leipzig on December 20 as the best match of the year, chosen by 37% of participants. Conversely, the most controversial moment, according to 35% of fans, was a refereeing error in the UEFA Champions League semi-final second leg against Real Madrid, where an incorrect offside call halted a promising Bayern attack, leading to a 2-1 loss.
These insights reflect a season of mixed fortunes for Bayern Munich, with standout individual performances overshadowed by critical errors and injuries impacting the team's overall success.
